Fort Mill was established on land received in 1787 by Thomas Spratt, one of the first settlers in this area. Originally called Fort Hill, because there was another Fort Hill in South Carolina, the name was changed to Fort Mill around 1830, named after a colonial-era fort built by the British in the 1750s and a nearby grist mill. Fort Mill received it charter as a town in 1873. |
